Up we go & new things for the area

Well we are now into week 19 of construction. Things are now really starting to take some shape. And now that things are starting to look a bit different we are starting to attract attention in Merimbula. A number of people have called into the site to check out the nail - less deck that has been laid using the Deck-Max system. One of the local developers was most impressed with the finished product. And now the Bluescope steel framing system is starting to pull in the locals. As there are a number of places that are subject to termite attack (including our site) in the area, the Bluescope steel framing has attracted quite a bit of attention.

Here is some evidence of the past termite activity on the site.

Termite Damage     Termite damage to floor framing     Termite tracks going up the wall

To counter this activity we chose to use steel framing, Hyspan LVL timber (which is more glue than timber and probably tastes like crap to termites) and Termimesh stainless steel termite barrier in the brickwork.

Terimesh going in            Termimesh starts to go in

Termimesh is an environmentally friendly mechanical barrier to termite ingress.

  • The Termite Control System provides a highly effective and long life physical termite barrier without the spraying of chemicals.
  • Termimesh’s quality assurance systems ensure that every installation of the physical termite barrier is of the highest standard.
  • The Termimesh Termite Control System has been researched and tested at the highest level.
  • The Termimesh Termite Control System has been approved for effectiveness and accredited with certifications from numerous government organisations.
  • The Termimesh Termite Control System has a proven track record on over 260,000 installations.

So we have tried to stop these little destructors from getting up to the timber areas with Termimesh and if they do get up here there is just steel framing made by Bluescope steel.

All of these initiatives are the most environmentally friendly ways of tackling this problem. No chemicals and using recyclable materials.

I will be looking in on your site again especially as you are using a few things I thought about in planning our own house(only have the land so far ,actually one street away from your construction site)
    Steel frame & Hebel.
The only negative I have encountered when asking people about steel frames is that builders say putting gyprock and second fix items on is time consuming compared to timber frame.
What do your builders think/say in this regard.
Have you had any negative reaction
    Regards,

    Rudi,
Looking forward to having you as a neighbour. The main reason for the steel frame is the termite activity in the area. This is the second time I have renovated this property and the first was due to significant termite damage. If you call up to the site a see John Bennett he can give you the low down. John’s background is in both domestic and commercial building so he has a good handle on the economics of a number of systems. There has been no negative feedback whatsoever.
Maybe we can get together for an ale or something when the building is complete.
    Are you in Warne crescent?

    Alex
